Here in Ontario, the College of Chiropodists of Ontario (COCOO) regulates and licenses all podiatrists and chiropodists. Both types of foot care professionals must take ongoing Continuing Medical Education hours (CME) totaling 25 hours annually to maintain their licenses.
The COCOO scope of practice statement states that chiropodists and podiatrists carry out “the assessment of the foot and the treatment and prevention of diseases, disorders or dysfunctions of the foot by therapeutic, orthotic or palliative means.”
In addition to the above, chiropodists and podiatrists may:
- Cut into subcutaneous tissues of the foot
- Inject into the feet a substance designated in the regulations
- Prescribe drugs designated in the regulations
- Administer, by inhalation, a substance designated in the regulations
The COCOO also states that podiatrists may communicate a diagnosis, take x-rays and perform bone surgery on the forefoot.
